Jenell and Cody Flynn
Flynn Creative
Hey, my name is Cody Flynn and I love to record audio, and make films, in and around Grande Prairie, AB.
I have been fascinated with audio since I was just a youngster. I didn’t have the musical ability my friends did, so I took it upon myself to learn the in’s and out’s of sound. That way, I could be a part of the musical adventures they were always on. I spent quite a few years running sound for the basement concerts hosted by them and every squeak, squeal, and pop provided an opportunity to enhance my skills. Eventually, I was able to produce a nice clean, clear sound for those shows. From there, I moved on to recording music, and doing the live sound for our yearly music and art festival “Landisfest”. I have recorded various pieces for a number of different bands such as Wand, Machinery, First Nations, Island Eyes, Jenell Pierson, Jenni Walker and Butterbones.
Then came the first ever Frantic 48 competition in Grande Prairie. Teams were given a line of dialogue, a prop, and a genre. Each team had 48 hours to write, shoot, edit, finalize, render and deliver a short film. I was asked by a friend in our local film community to come hold a boom. I didn’t even have my own gear yet, he just needed someone to show up. To show him I was serious, I made my own boom pole with a home made wind jammer and showed up on set. I was immediately hooked. The constant problem solving and having to adapt to ever changing situations had added that much needed excitement back into the sound world for me.
At the time, I didn’t know many people in the film industry, especially in northern Alberta, so I decided if I wanted to keep doing sound for films, I was going to have to make my own films. I took to the internet in a big way, researching, learning, and planning. I had learned that in order to be a good film maker, you need to understand photography first. I borrowed a camera from a friend and set out to learn to take good photos. During this time, I got my first video gig. The result was the Haskap wine video you can see in the film section of this website. It was a big success and further propelled me toward my goal of making good quality films but also put me in a spot where it was time to invest in my own gear.
I bought a camera, some gear, have done a few more projects and I am still ready and excited as ever to make more films and record more sounds.
